Wyoming Roving Archivist Program Launches Directory

The Wyoming Roving Archivist Program (RAP) has published its directory, a list of institutions in Wyoming with archival holdings. Explore the new directory at rovingarchivist.wyo.gov/directory.

The directory is part of the first phase of a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant-funded collaboration between the University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center, the Wyoming State Archives, and the Wyoming State Historical Records Advisory Board (WY SHRAB). The first phase of the project has focused on conducting a needs assessment survey, which took place in late 2022 and early 2023, creating recommendations based on the survey results, and building an online directory of cultural heritage institutions in Wyoming with archival holdings. A major goal with the RAP is to work collaboratively with the cultural heritage institutions of Wyoming to best serve their needs.

Initial Directory entries were identified based on the results of the needs assessment survey. Institutions who identified either their primary or secondary function to be archival or indicated they held materials which were archival in nature were included. Institutions can and will be added in the future, and institutions can request to be removed or have their profile updated to reflect the institution most accurately.

The Directory is meant to be a living record that will change over time. It will serve to document Wyoming's cultural heritage institutions  and serve as a resource for institutions, researchers, and more. Cultural heritage institutions of all kinds are welcome to submit their institution for inclusion in the Directory, as are related institutions, such as colleges and/or universities. Potential institution types include, but are not limited to:

• Academic library, college/university

• Agency or university department with scientific, archaeological, or artifact collections

• Archives

• Arts organizations (including galleries, arts center, art museums)

• Cultural center

• Historic site/building

• Historical society

• Museum

• National/state park

• Nature center, arboretum, or botanical garden

• Public library

• Science/technology museum (including planetariums)

• Visitor center

Directory profiles include descriptions of institutions, institutional contact information, institutional addresses, and the option to provide photos and logos representative of institutions.
