Cheyenne Depot Museum

The Cheyenne Depot Museum.

The Cheyenne Depot Museum (CDM) is the steward of the Historic UPRR Depot, a National Historic Landmark. The Depot became the cornerstone for the frontier town of Cheyenne and later the capital of Wyoming. It has always been a central meeting place for citizens and today is a popular destination and gathering place for those living in the region, as well as national and international tourists.

Built in 1886 by the Union Pacific Railroad, it is the last remaining grand railroad station on the transcontinental route, designed by famed architect Henry Van Brunt. Visit the museum to learn about the history of Cheyenne, the Transcontinental Railroad, and see the beloved narrow gauge UC&N Model Railroad built by Harry W. Brunk.

The mission of the Cheyenne Depot Museum is: To celebrate the spirit, teamwork, optimism, and sacrifices of the men and women who built and are the life of the Union Pacific Railroad, the Cheyenne Depot, and the City of Cheyenne.

The CDM provides tours for Wyoming third graders who, as part of their core humanities curriculum, learn about the Transcontinental Railroad. Our museum tours put faces to the historical figures they learn about in the classroom. Objects bring to life the timeline they study in books.

Today, the CDM is the heart of historic downtown Cheyenne and the cultural sector. Depot Days, an annual event typically held in May, brings visitors from around the world. The Plaza in front of the CDM is home to myriad events in the summer, bringing together locals and visitors to enjoy diverse cultural events and concerts. Cultural events include the Hispanic Festival, Celtic Festival, and the Cheyenne Arts Festival.
